Student Outcomes

Learning outcomes for students who complete degree programs in the Plymouth State University Department of Art:


2D Studio Art BA and BFA

  • Students are able to appreciate diversity of peer and professional work and can engage in critical discussion and critique with depth of analysis and respect for aesthetic and conceptual diversity.
  • Students have honed their personal voice into a clearly defined vision and are able to articulate this voice visually, verbally, and in writing.
  • Students are able to produce serial imagery and variation to create a cohesive body of work.
  • Students are highly fluent with media and have internalized design issues.
  • Students have developed a deep and broad range of skills and knowledge of media and techniques that enable the maximum amount of personal choices, self-designing of problems, ongoing growth and exploration of creative directions, and cultivation of fluency in areas of choice.
  • Students engage in self directed problem analysis, problem solving, and critical /creative thinking.
  • Students have developed a repertoire of personal AH resources and role models ranging from historical to contemporary.
  • Students display highly developed self-discipline and work ethic.
  • Students are able to present work professionally to multiple audiences.
  • BFA Students have worked with a professional gallery director and are able to collaboratively design an exhibit of their work.
  • Students have developed an extensive body of work and prepared a professional portfolio.
  • Students are prepared to make the transition from university into the outside world. They are able to plan for budgeting of materials, studio needs, and self-promotion – as needed to pursue professional artistry and/or graduate studies.

3D Studio Art (Ceramics/Sculpture) BA and BFA

Through the completion of the program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the vocabulary of 3D
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of 3D form, and how these principles relate to their own physical work (linear forms, planar forms, solid forms, geometric forms, organic forms, open forms, closed forms, hard forms, soft forms, color, pattern, texture, repetition, gesture, scale, static vs. dynamic forms, structure, triangulation, tension, torsion, shear, compression)
  • Work comfortably with a wide range of tools and materials (wood, clay, plaster, and non-traditional materials)
  • Demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of techniques (additive processes, subtractive processes, constructive processes, fastening, mold-making, casting, etc.)
  • Demonstrate basic concepts and skills linking 3D processes and techniques to graphic design-related themes
  • Demonstrate proficiency in taking a professor’s assignment and developing it into a fully realized project, both conceptually and technically
  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate several contemporary issues in 3D art, and how their own work relates to those issues
  • Demonstrate understanding of the basic historical developments in recent 3D art, and be able to talk about how their own work relates to these developments
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between modernism and postmodernism
  • Demonstrate the ability to synthesize formal, technical, and conceptual thinking in a single project
  • Demonstrate basic research skills and an ability to employ these skills in the service of writing about, talking about, and making art
  • Demonstrate advanced technical skills in certain areas consistent with the student’s own artistic interests

The following student outcomes have been developed to meet the state and national standards for visual art education and the program accreditation competencies of NH DoE, NCATE and NASAD, as well as the Conceptual Framework for Teacher Education in Art Education at PSU. Through the completion of the BS and MAT Art Education Program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic concepts and skills of studio art foundations involving a balanced program of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional creative problem solving disciplines including drawing, design, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, various crafts and related media, techniques and processes.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of art history, aesthetic theory, and art criticism, involving the study of the development of past and contemporary art forms, contending theories of art and critical methodologies of art.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skill in a selected studio area and/or in art history.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of art materials and equipment usage and of safety hazards of art materials and tools in the classroom.
  • Develop a portfolio of personal artwork and recognize the opportunity for exhibition of selected works.
  • Develop philosophical and historical foundation related to the human potential for creative expression through the arts.
  • Develop philosophical and historical foundation and understanding of the role of the arts in our society, culture and education and the ability to advocate for the role of the arts in our society, culture and education.
  • Develop psychological foundation involving an understanding of individual development and the manner in which aesthetic experience can effect the development of human personality including application to gifted students and students with disabilities.
  • Develop sociological or anthropological foundation of the aesthetic response as recorded in various cultures throughout history.
  • Develop knowledge of procedures for organizing, promoting and managing a comprehensive art curriculum
  • Demonstrate knowledge of various methods of curriculum development, implementation and assessment of learning outcomes in the visual arts.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the role the arts may play when integrated across the school-wide curriculum.
  • Develop the understanding of a variety of forms of contemporary technology for implementation in studio art and art education contexts.


Through the completion of the BA in Art History, students will be able to:

  • Develop an appreciation for the broad range of human creativity over time and an understanding of the visual arts as a mode of visual communication in a global context
  • Demonstrate general knowledge and understanding of the major art historical periods – styles, iconography, terminology, essential questions, issues, and context – across history and across cultures
  • Demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding of selective historical  periods/civilizations in the history of art, including modern/contemporary art
  • Demonstrate competence in examining, interpreting, and critiquing objects from the history of art and visual culture –painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic arts, photography, ritual objects, and new media
  • Develop advanced research skills with understanding of the critical evaluation of print and electronic sources and the appropriate use of primary and secondary sources
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of art historical methodologies, criticism, and theory with an understanding of their appropriate application in researching art historical problems and museum studies issues
  • Demonstrate advanced skills in a variety of writing formats – including essay, exhibition catalog entry, grant proposal, and research paper preparation/presentation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamic role the visual arts and cultural institutions, especially the museum, play in society across cultures
  • Develop an understanding of the interdisciplinary connections of art history with other disciplines, such as anthropology, business, media studies,  philosophy, and the sciences
  • Demonstrate refined oral presentation skills using electronic media
  • Develop an understanding of the range of professional applications of art history in such fields as teaching, museums and galleries, business, design, historic preservation, library science, and technology


  • Students are able to demonstrate expertise as visual communicators.
  • Students are prepared as pre-professionals ready for a wide variety of entry-level jobs in the field of Graphic Design—including a portfolio of digital and mounted artwork to show results of preparation and generation of work.
  • Students develop a comprehensive set of skills cultivated through a progressive series of courses that are tiered in complexity, from introductory level typography and layout skills to more advanced and complex corporate design and multi-media applications.
  • Students develop high level skills in the areas of both print and motion design, including logo and symbol generation, publication design, website and animation design, in addition to generating and understanding color and typographic systems, and complete corporate identity systems design.
  • Students are able to present and articulate all three stages of project development to clients: roughs and comps, selection of narrowed comps, and final presentation with all applications.
  • Students are able to approach design problems through the integration of conceptual and practical aspects of the design process with critical acumen and creative innovation.
  • Students develop projects through a combination and balance of both: a) skills developed toward conceptual analyzation, and b) skills in technical proficiency with digital software media.
  • Students can address professional job expectations and the overall business concerns of the profession. Students are also able to evaluate ethical issues in design and other critical design issues.
  • Students are able to engage in sustained research necessary to develop comprehensive corporate identity projects involving logo applications, packaging design, promotional and sales displays, publications, market analysis, client need analysis, comparison of competitors in the market, and target audience analysis.

Students who complete the BFA program have all of the above competencies plus have completed a professional internship and a yearlong capstone experience requiring sustained research, ideation, and generation for the development of a multidimensional corporate identity project. Students display independence and self-reliance in organization, time management, project development, preparation and digital pre-print production, budget development, development and installation of project exhibition, and defense of project to professional critics/guest designers.
