The world is full of amazing and mysterious things, and we all have questions about the different things we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel. Now is your chance to ask those questions as we explore the world around us, finding answers through science. Science is everywhere you look. Go ahead, look closer. Join us for a week-long science camp designed to introduce students entering grades 1 through 3 to the wonderful science world. We’ll explore everything from how seeds grow into plants, to live animals right here in Boyd, to the black magic of chemistry, to the invisible world of what germs really are. Bring your curiosity and your questions to a research lab in Boyd Science Camp.

THEATRICAL COMBAT CAMP
Instructor: Jim Gleich
Dates: August 7th-11th
Times: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Ages: Entering 5th, 6th, and 7th grades
Cost: $225
Location: Silver Hall Dance Studio
Jim Gleich has been involved with theater for many years and has intensely studied the art of theatrical/stage combat. These are specialized techniques designed to create the illusion of physical combat without causing harm to the performers. The term is also used informally to describe fight choreography for film and television. It is a common field of study for actors and dancers and is closely related to the practice of stunts. Campers will be learning the basic skills of Hand-to-Hand combat, rolling, simple falls, choreography notation/analysis, stage combat history, and introduction to single sword techniques. All students will perform their class fight each day at the end of class. Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring a pad and pencil for notes.

MINDFLIGHT 2017 July 16th-21st
Secrets of the Universe, Seen and Unseen…
Mindflight is a six day, five night residential program offering interdisciplinary experiences. Mindflight is open to motivated students currently entering the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. Student stay on Plymouth State University’s campus and are immersed in a living learning community that combines academic and social enrichment. This year’s sessions include:
Video Ventures
Ted White, Instructor
Students will work in small teams to create short but potent video sequences. The 2017 Mindflight theme focuses on illuminating the unseen world before our eyes and integrates various techniques involved in planning, shooting, and editing for video. Students will receive instruction in the conceptual and technological tools needed to employ video as an expressive medium and learn a variety of camera and editing techniques to convey their stories.
Acting and Absolute Theatre!
Fran Page, Instructor
Break the boundaries and popular assumptions of what theatre is in our everyday life! Students will explore diverse theatre styles including basic movements and play-making. During this program our participants will collaborate with one another in creating a new and exciting piece of theatre!
Seeing the Unseen: Art and Science Collide!
Kimberly Ritchie, Instructor
Students will create magical prints by looking for the unseen in natural objects. We will start with guided nature walks, collecting natural materials along the way and exploring science through the examination of the objects. Students will make creative images that will be matted to be framed or shared, and we will form an accordion Art and Natural Science Artist Book with our prints. Students will work in the photography dark room on cloudy days and on sunny days they will expose and develop their prints using objects outdoors and sunlight. Seeing this process happen naturally is super exciting to experience!
Forensics
Dr. Anil Waghe, Instructor
In Forensics, campers will learn about collecting and analyzing various types of criminal evidence. They will also better understand the important role science plays in today’s criminal investigations. Included (but not limited to) techniques are: Infrared Spectroscopic analysis of polymers, hair and fiber analysis, latent fingerprint visualization method and lifting prints, blood spatter and Luminol identification. These techniques will be used to crack an unsolved arson case.
Computer Programming
Susan Schwartz, Instructor
Students will use Alice, an innovative programming environment to support the creation of 3D animations. Alice is a freely available teaching tool designed to be a student’s first exposure to object-oriented programming. It allows students to learn of the unseen fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In Alice, 3-D objects (e.g., people, animals, and vehicles) populate a virtual world and students create a program to animate the objects. Susan Schwartz chose Alice because campers can continue using the program to share with others after getting home from camp. In addition, campers can work with Alice before coming to Mindflight. http://www.alice.org
Dates: July 16th –July 21at
Location: Plymouth State University
Cost: $675 (includes all activities, lodging and meals)
