The Sound of Music is a beloved story that is embedded in our collective consciousness. The choice to do this production at ETC was reinforced almost immediately by the positive reaction from the Plymouth community. "I love the play!" "I've been waiting for ETC to put it on for years!" "Who will you get to play Maria?" "I know all the songs by heart!"
The excitement continued to build throughout the rehearsal process, as our talented community players took on their well-known roles, transforming the Silver Cultural Arts Center into Salzburg, Austria, and filling the hills with the sound of music. We worked hard to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere and culture of pre-World War II Austria with guest lecturers and authentic meals. We even learned that our Maria (Lauren Keefe) shares a birthday with the real Maria von Trapp (January 26th)!
Working together toward this goal has been an exciting and rewarding process. We began on January 2nd for our read-through of the script, and we all agreed it was like old home week as old ETC friends and new greeted each other with hugs and laughter. We gathered together to "make a play" as communities have done for thousands and thousands of years.
Together, we have tried to recreate the heart and soul of this beautiful and touching story, rekindling memories and building new ones. Through our "playing," we will take you to another time, another place, and surround you with the familiar melodies and unforgettable characters that we have all come to know and love.
