Meet International Ski Team Member: Rebecca Chastney

Q: Where in the world did you grow up?

A: I grew up between Leicester, England, Chamoix, France and Villars, Switzerland.

Q: What was your favorite part about growing up in Europe?

A: Growing up with many different cultures and being able to visit so many different places because European countries are so close in proximity.

Q: What prompted you to begin skiing?

A: At the time we lived next to a ski slope in France, so my parents put me on skis when I was two and I kept progressing through ski school which eventually brought me here.

Q: Where is the most unique place skiing has taken you?

A: The craziest place skiing has taken me is definitely South Africa. It was one of the coolest places I’ve ever skied!

Q: How did you first hear about Plymouth State and the NCAA?

A: I always knew I wanted to be a student-athlete and that’s not an option in Great Britain, so I knew America was the best place for me to study and compete at the same time. An old coach heard about the PSU ski team and got me in touch with the coach. After meeting with our coach I instantly knew this was a team I wanted to be a part of.

Q: At what age did you know you had the potential to reach the NCAA Division 1 Level?

A: When I made the British Junior team at 14 and racing for Switzerland in the World Schools Games at 16. These all gave me the confidence to apply to an NCAA Division 1 team.

Q: What has been your favorite part about being a student at PSU?

A: One of my favorite things about being a student here is the community, everyone is so welcoming and kind.

Q: What has been most difficult about transitioning to life in the United States?

A: Nothing too crazy, maybe that the word pants is used in place of trousers over here!

Q: If you could tell a younger skier back home why they should come to Plymouth State, what would you tell them?

A: I’ve never experienced a community or a team that is so supportive of one another. And being so close to the mountain, having access to amazing training will be hard to find somewhere else. You won’t regret coming here!
