BA in Spanish

The BA in Spanish is a balanced program of major study in Spanish, language skills development, Ibero-American cultures, politics, history, art, music and literature. Students may elect to minor in another language (German, French), Applied Linguistics, or in another field (such as Business Administration, Anthropology/Sociology, Art History, Film Studies, Geography, Global Tourism, Media Studies, Peace and Social Justice Studies, Professional Communication, and Women’s Studies).

It is estimated that more than 350 million people can speak Spanish fluently, making Spanish the fourth most spoken language in the world. In the United States, 45 million people speak Spanish as a first or second language. In addition, Spanish is the most spoken non-English language in U.S. homes, even among non-Hispanics.

The continuous expansion of international relations makes knowledge of, and fluency in, Spanish a critical skill for today’s professional. Students may pursue careers in education, research, translation, interpretation, diplomacy, banking, technology, commerce, public health, media studies, business, and journalism to name a few. The demand for multilingual personnel extends to all fields of enterprise including non-profit organizations.

While at Plymouth State University, students are encouraged to study abroad. We have a direct exchange program with the Universidad Austral, where you can study abroad in Valdivia, Chile for the same price as PSU tuition and keep your financial aid package. We also have numerous study abroad opportunities in several Spanish-speaking countries, such as Spain, Puerto Rico, Argentina, and Costa Rica.
