Warning about Online Exploitation of Students: 3/28/2022

Dear PSU Students,

In the last two months, the University Police have taken four reports from students who have shared intimate photos of themselves with people they have met online. In these cases, the students were then extorted for money by the person they were communicating with who turned out to be fictitious. These cases are very difficult to track, as many of the perpetrators are not in the U.S. and are very skilled at shielding their identities. The University Police reminds all students not to share personal information online with non-verified sites. This is especially important when using social media.

If you have been the victim of this type of crime, please contact the University Police. Reports can also be made to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) located here: https://www.ic3.gov/Home/ComplaintChoice

Attached to this email is the Student’s Guide to Frands and Scams, published by the nation’s leading authority for campus safety.
