Welcome back to campus and to first year students, we are glad you selected Plymouth State University. We hope you had an enjoyable summer.
We would like to take a moment to remind you of some safety matters involving how you use social media and other online activities.
Each year the University Police receive reports from students or families who have fallen victim to internet scams. In many of these cases, students have shared intimate photos of themselves with people they have met online. In these cases, the students were then extorted for money by the person they were communicating with who turned out to be fictitious. These cases are very difficult to track, as many of the perpetrators are not in the U.S. and are very skilled at shielding their identities. The University Police reminds all students not to share personal information online with non-verified sites. This is especially important when using social media.
Some internet scams target the families of students by misleading families to believe their student is in trouble and money must be sent to help their student.
If you become a victim of this type of crime, please contact the University Police. If this occurs to your family, please advise family members to contact their local police department.
